Description

Short bus tour of the town to see some beauties outside the centre.

Return to Piazza Garibaldi, the largest square in the town in 19th century style, and start of the visit of the town centre on foot: Corso Roma, the main street, the Shopping street par excellence, which today, apart from the numerous shops present, has been enriched by coffee shops with outdoor seating, meeting place for the young and not so young almost any day of the week.

In Corso Roma, you can visit the Church of San Giovannino, a small apparently anonymous church. In its style, between Renaissance and Baroque, it encloses what the Sacred Mounts are for Christianity. You can also admire the historic Borsalino hat shop, after looking at the exquisite 18th and 19th century buildings along the entire street.

Continue in Via Milano, entering the area of the old Jewish Ghetto where the beautiful facade of the synagogue stands out and you access the oldest neighbourhood of the town: Borgo Rovereto. Don't miss a short stroll along Via Bissati, a small very characteristic street. With its small artisan shops and wrought iron signs, it recalls much more famous streets, such as the Getreidestrasse of Salzburg.

Taking a circular tour and passing along Via Vochieri, we return to Via Milano and continuing into Via Migliara, once part of the Ghetto and from the 19th century, for a short time, the street of Tailors, you arrive to the centre of the town: Piazza della Libertà.

In this square we have a concentration of historical elements, namely Palatium Vetus (first town hall), the current town hall, Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Ghilini, built in the 18th century to a design by the architect Benedetto Alfieri, today home to the Prefecture and of the Provincial government and the interesting futuristic mosaic by Gino Severini along the entire facade of the Post office building.

After the square, visit the Neoclassical Cathedral a short distance away. Having left the Cathedral, we will return to piazza della Libertà and go into Via San Giacomo della Vittoria, so called to remember a battle won by the residents of Alessandria against the French in the 15th century, to access Galleria Guerci, the Liberty style drawing room of the town where you can breathe a romantically 19th century air and end the tour enjoying an aperitif at one of the historic pastry shops of the town.
