Sinagoga e Musei Ebraici di Casale Monferrato

The Synagogue was built in 1595 at the centre of the old ghetto and renovated during the second half of the 19th century. In the prayer room, dominated by the architecturally impressive Holy Ark that houses the Scrolls of the Law, the rococo Baroque Piedmont style triumphs everywhere in both furnishings and decoration. The two floors of the women's galleries are home to the Museum of Jewish Art and History where a rich collection of furnishings and objects for worship are on display. Of great interest is the section devoted to the presentation of the festivities that accompany the essential religious and social stages of the Jewish life and that dedicated to modern Jewish art that displays works by artists such as Emanuele Luzzati, Roland Topor and Antonio Recalcati. The striking basement room which was once home to the ancient unleavened bread oven is now dedicated to the Museum of Lights, which exhibits works of artists who have interpreted the theme of the Hanukkah Lamp in an original manner.
