Torre Troiana

The tower, also known as Clock tower, has the function of a civic tower and is one of the symbols of the city. It faces onto piazza Medici and is certainly one of the most imposing, perfectly built and best-preserved medieval towers in Piedmont. Characteristic elements of the tower are the 12 mullioned windows with round arches distributed on three levels and the jutting end strip consisting of three orders of blind arches, alternating terracotta and sandstone. Originally, the tower terminated with a terrace and swallow-tailed crenellation. Subsequently, the roof with lantern was added, which is still in place. A staircase of 199 steps takes to the crenellation-level and from its 36.30 m in height, 44 at the top of the lantern; the tower offers a perfect panoramic view of the city. The construction probably dates to the second half of the 13th century and was part of a fortress which belonged to the Troia family. In the 15th century, the Troia family had died out and the complex passed to the Savoy family. Subsequently, Emanuele Filiberto gave the palace to the Count of Camerano, reserving the use of the tower to the Town Hall; the civic bell was installed on the tower to mark the hours and to signal notices of public interest. The current bell is from 1531 making it one of the oldest bells in Piedmont still in operation. The tower was recently restored and opened to the public. It is now possible by means of a wooden stairs of 199 steps to climb to the crenellation level, a stunning viewpoint which offers a 360-degree view of the city and the surrounding territory.
